Former heavyweight contender Denis Boytsov has died at the age of 40, eleven years after suffering severe injuries that ended his boxing career.

His death was announced on October 17. His father, Nikolai, told Russian news agency TASS that Boytsov died suddenly at home after a blood clot became dislodged.

A Promising Heavyweight Career

Boytsov finished his professional career with a record of 36-1 (27 KOs). The Russian built his reputation fighting out of Germany, developing into a prominent contender during Wladimir Klitschko’s championship reign.

His only professional defeat came against Alex Leapai in November 2013, a result that cost him his position in the world-title picture. He subsequently recorded three further victories before his career was cut short in 2015.

Years of Care and Family Support

In May 2015, Boytsov was found unconscious with severe head injuries in a Berlin underground railway tunnel. He underwent surgery and spent time in a medically induced coma, followed by years of treatment and rehabilitation in Germany and Russia.

His brother, Maxim, told TASS that although Boytsov could no longer speak, he communicated with those around him through gestures and eye contact.

Boytsov’s family remained central to his care throughout the years following his injuries. His passing marks the loss of a heavyweight whose career ended at just 29.
