Heavyweight Boxing
Brooklyn, New York - The highly anticipated June 7 heavyweight clash between Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller and Fabio Wardley has been officially called off, following news that Miller has suffered a shoulder injury in training camp. The bout, scheduled to take place at Portman Road, home of Ipswich Town FC, was set to be one of the most explosive matchups of the summer — and a key step in the WBA heavyweight title picture.
A statement released by Queensberry Promotions confirmed the withdrawal:
“Due to a shoulder injury sustained during training camp, Jarrell Miller has had to withdraw from his scheduled bout with Fabio Wardley at Portman Road on June 7. Queensberry are currently speaking to all relevant parties regarding the situation and expect to have a replacement opponent announced within the next 48 hours.”
Miller (26-1-2, 22 KOs), who hasn’t fought since a controversial draw against Andy Ruiz Jr. last August, was hoping to reclaim momentum in the division. That draw followed a long layoff and a stormy career punctuated by failed drug tests and promotional issues. The Wardley fight was seen as a make-or-break opportunity — both in competitive terms and for public redemption.
The fight had already generated buzz with a heated press conference, where tensions boiled over into physical contact after Miller jabbed Wardley during a fiery exchange. With both men undefeated in their last official fights and the WBA interim title on the line, stakes were high.
Wardley (18-0-1, 17 KOs), currently ranked No. 11 by Top Heavyweights, is coming off a destructive first-round knockout over Frazer Clarke — a bout that further solidified his reputation as one of the UK’s most dangerous rising heavyweights. Understandably frustrated by the collapse of this high-profile bout, Wardley now waits for news on a replacement opponent.
Among the names being discussed are Michael Hunter, who is already in talks for a WBA ‘regular’ title bout with Kubrat Pulev, and Filip Hrgović, who recently defeated Joe Joyce in a high-level clash in April. Whether either will be available on short notice remains to be seen.
With the June 7 event fast approaching, Queensberry expects to announce a new opponent for Wardley within the next 48 hours.
