Estosadok, Russia - Vartan Arutyunyan will face fellow unbeaten Russian heavyweight Basir Abakarov in an intriguing eight-round prospect matchup on Saturday, August 22 at RED ARENA in Estosadok, Russia.

Vartan Arutyunyan meets the unbeaten Basir Abakarov in Russia, with the winner moving another step closer to heavyweight relevance.

Arutyunyan, 12-0 (8 KOs), has gradually begun to emerge from the crowded field of unbeaten heavyweight prospects and will attempt to take another step toward wider relevance against the considerably taller Abakarov.

The 26-year-old southpaw is coming off arguably the most significant victory of his career, stopping Georgiy Yunovidov in the sixth round in February.

Yunovidov entered that fight with an 11-1 record and represented a meaningful step forward in opposition for Arutyunyan. The victory followed an eight-round unanimous decision over Vitaly Kudukhov in August 2025 and stoppage wins over Kareb Shitana and Dilan Prasovic.

Arutyunyan has now won four consecutive fights since March 2024 by stoppage in three of them, while steadily improving the level of opposition.

At 6'1", Arutyunyan isn't an especially large heavyweight, and Saturday's opponent will present a notably different physical challenge.

Basir Abakarov, 11-0 (9 KOs), is a 34-year-old heavyweight from Dagestan who stands approximately 6'5" and carries an 81 percent knockout rate.

Abakarov's professional record has been built more slowly, but there are some interesting results on it.

In March 2023, Abakarov defeated then-unbeaten Vitaly Kudukhov by majority decision over six rounds. Four months later, he stopped Ireland's Sean Turner in the third round.

Turner entered at 12-3 and remains the most recognizable name on Abakarov's professional record.

The Kudukhov result also gives Saturday's matchup a useful common opponent. Abakarov edged Kudukhov by majority decision in 2023, while Arutyunyan defeated him more decisively by unanimous decision over eight rounds two years later.

The biggest question surrounding Abakarov may be activity.

His victory over Turner in July 2023 remains his most recent bout on his conventional professional boxing record, leaving him with a significant period of inactivity heading into a fight against an opponent who has been steadily progressing.

Arutyunyan should therefore enter Saturday as the more established prospect and the fighter carrying considerably greater momentum. Abakarov, however, brings an unbeaten record, considerable size advantage and enough punching power to make the matchup worth watching.

The fight takes place at RED ARENA in Estosadok, located in the Krasnaya Polyana resort area near Sochi. The card is promoted by RCC Boxing Promotions, with Arutyunyan-Abakarov among the featured bouts.

This isn't yet a fight with major implications for the heavyweight division. It is scheduled for eight rounds, and both fighters remain firmly in prospect territory rather than among the division's established contenders.

But an unbeaten 12-0 heavyweight facing an unbeaten 11-0 heavyweight makes for an interesting test at this stage of their careers.

For Arutyunyan, a convincing victory would strengthen the case that he is ready for another step up in opposition. For Abakarov, a win after such a lengthy absence from the conventional professional ranks would immediately make his name considerably more interesting.

Either way, one unbeaten heavyweight should emerge on Saturday a little closer to relevance.
