Moscow, Russia - Murat Gassiev will make the first defense of his WBA World Heavyweight Championship this Saturday, July 11, when he faces Germany’s Peter Kadiru in the main event of IBA.PRO 19 in Moscow.

Murat Gassiev makes the first defense of his WBA World Heavyweight Championship against late replacement Peter Kadiru on July 11 in Moscow.

The bout was originally scheduled as Gassiev vs. Tony Yoka, a meeting between a former unified cruiserweight champion and the 2016 Olympic super-heavyweight gold medalist. That matchup carried name value, pedigree and a clear international storyline. But Yoka withdrew after suffering a back injury in training, forcing organizers into a late replacement search.

Kadiru, 23-1 (13 KOs), has now stepped in for the biggest opportunity of his professional career.

Gassiev’s First Defense As Full Champion

Gassiev, 33-2 (26 KOs), enters this fight in a unique position. After Oleksandr Usyk vacated his remaining heavyweight titles, Gassiev was elevated from WBA Regular champion to full WBA heavyweight champion.

That makes Saturday’s fight more than a keep-busy appearance. It is now a world-title defense.

For Gassiev, the expectations are obvious. He is fighting at home, he is the established name, and he is the champion. Anything short of a convincing win will invite questions, especially given the late opponent change and the uneven perception of his heavyweight run so far.

Gassiev remains a dangerous, heavy-handed fighter. His cruiserweight prime showed elite-level pressure, timing and finishing ability. At heavyweight, however, the transition has not been seamless. He has had moments of real power, but also stretches where he has looked slower, more measured and less naturally suited to the division than he once appeared at cruiserweight.

Still, he now holds a recognized heavyweight world title. That alone changes the stakes.

Peter Kadiru Gets The Call

Peter Kadiru is not Tony Yoka in terms of name recognition, but he is not a throwaway replacement.

The 29-year-old German heavyweight is 6-foot-4½, orthodox, and enters the fight with a 23-1 record. His lone defeat came in 2022, when he was stopped in the first round by Marcos Antonio Aumada, a result that badly damaged his prospect momentum.

Since then, Kadiru has rebuilt. He has put together a winning streak and recently defeated experienced heavyweight Senad Gashi, a victory that helped move him back into the conversation for larger opportunities.

This is still a massive jump in class.

Kadiru has been operating around the European level. Gassiev, despite questions about his heavyweight form, has operated at world level and brings far greater championship experience.

A Dangerous Kind Of Fight For Gassiev

On paper, Gassiev should win.

But late-replacement fights can be awkward. The champion has trained for Yoka, a taller, technical Olympic-style boxer. Kadiru brings a different rhythm, different risk profile and a very different psychology.

Kadiru has almost nothing to lose. He gets a world-title shot on short notice, against a champion carrying all the pressure. If he performs well, his stock rises. If he wins, it would be one of the most unexpected heavyweight title upsets in years.

For Gassiev, the equation is harsher. He must win, and he likely must win clearly.

A routine victory keeps him moving. A struggle creates doubt. A loss would be a major shock.

The Heavyweight Picture

The heavyweight division is in a period of major movement following Usyk’s decision to give up his titles. Gassiev now has a belt, but he still needs a defining heavyweight performance to fully establish himself as one of the division’s leading men.

That is what makes this fight important.

Kadiru is not the original opponent. He is not the glamour name. But he is young enough, active enough and ambitious enough to make this more interesting than a simple replacement bout.

For Gassiev, Saturday is about authority.

He has the belt. Now he has to look like the champion.
