Oxnard, CA, USA - For more than half a decade, the heavyweight division revolved around one man.

Oleksandr Usyk's decision to relinquish his heavyweight world titles marks the end of one of the sport's greatest championship reigns and the beginning of a new era - Александр Усик / Usyk

Oleksandr Usyk climbed from undisputed cruiserweight champion to the summit of heavyweight boxing, defeating champion after champion while assembling one of the finest résumés of the modern era. Now, at 39 years of age, the undefeated Ukrainian has made a decision that instantly changes the landscape of the sport.

Usyk has officially relinquished his remaining world heavyweight titles, voluntarily vacating the WBA, WBC and IBF championships while announcing that his next appearance in the ring will be his "last dance." Importantly, he has not announced his retirement. Instead, he is stepping away from the obligations that come with being heavyweight champion while leaving the door open for one final professional appearance.

It marks the end of one of the most remarkable championship reigns in heavyweight history.

A Champion With Nothing Left to Prove

Very few fighters leave the sport on their own terms while still sitting atop the mountain.

Usyk has earned that privilege.

After conquering the cruiserweight division and becoming the undisputed champion, he made the move to heavyweight despite giving away considerable size to many of his opponents. Rather than simply competing, he established himself as the division's dominant force.

He defeated Anthony Joshua twice to capture the heavyweight championship before twice overcoming Tyson Fury to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era. When Daniel Dubois emerged as champion following the temporary split of the titles, Usyk reclaimed undisputed status with a commanding fifth-round stoppage victory at Wembley Stadium in July 2025.

That proved to be his final meaningful championship contest.

Rather than continuing through another cycle of mandatory defenses and organizational obligations, Usyk has decided the time is right to step aside and allow the next generation to compete for boxing's biggest prizes.

Why Vacate Now?

The timing makes sense.

As unified champion, Usyk was facing an increasingly difficult situation. Multiple sanctioning bodies had mandatory challengers waiting, each operating under separate rules and timelines. Satisfying every obligation had become virtually impossible without tying up the heavyweight division for another year or more.

Instead of allowing negotiations, purse bids and mandatory orders to dictate the final chapter of his career, Usyk has chosen a cleaner path.

He leaves as champion.

He remains undefeated.

And he now has complete freedom to decide what his final appearance looks like.

Whether that eventual "last dance" is another professional contest or a series of exhibitions before retirement remains to be seen, but it is clear that championship obligations will no longer determine his schedule.

The Heavyweight Division Opens Overnight

Usyk's announcement creates one of the biggest power shifts the division has experienced in years.

For months, virtually every contender's route to a world title depended upon the Ukrainian champion's plans.

That roadblock has now disappeared.

The WBC championship is expected to move toward interim champion Agit Kabayel, while the IBF and WBA will begin establishing their own paths toward crowning new champions. Exactly how those organizations proceed remains to be seen, particularly the WBA, where the future status of current WBA Regular champion Murat Gassiev will undoubtedly become one of boxing's major talking points.

The result is a heavyweight division suddenly filled with meaningful championship opportunities.

Established contenders such as Filip Hrgović, Frank Sanchez and Agit Kabayel now find themselves closer than ever to world titles, while younger contenders including Moses Itauma could soon be fighting on the sport's biggest stage.

Instead of waiting for one dominant champion to clear mandatory challengers, multiple title fights are now likely to emerge over the coming months.

An Extraordinary Legacy

Regardless of what happens next, Oleksandr Usyk's place in heavyweight history is secure.

He retires from championship competition as an undefeated heavyweight, a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion and one of the very few fighters to achieve undisputed status in two weight divisions.

His victories over Joshua, Fury and Dubois define an era.

His technical brilliance, discipline, movement and ring intelligence consistently allowed him to overcome naturally larger opponents, proving once again that elite skill remains boxing's greatest equalizer.

Champions often lose their belts inside the ring.

Others surrender them only after defeat or injury.

Usyk has chosen another path altogether.

He leaves the heavyweight throne because he believes the time has come.

Now, for the first time in years, the race to become heavyweight champion of the world begins anew.
