Moscow, Russia - Former unified cruiserweight king Murat Gassiev will defend his WBA Regular heavyweight title against Olympic gold medalist Tony Yoka on July 11 at VTB Arena in Moscow, Russia, in a heavyweight clash carrying major implications for both fighters.

Murat Gassiev defends his WBA Regular heavyweight title against Tony Yoka on July 11 in Moscow in a crucial heavyweight crossroads fight.

For Gassiev, the fight represents the latest step in his long-awaited heavyweight resurgence after years of injuries, inactivity and frustration following his cruiserweight unification run. For Yoka, it may be the biggest and most important opportunity of his professional career.

Gassiev captured the WBA Regular heavyweight title in December with a brutal sixth-round knockout of Kubrat Pulev in Dubai, reminding the division that his power remains among the most dangerous in the sport.

The Russian puncher enters the bout with a record of 33-2 (26 KOs), while Yoka arrives at 15-3 (12 KOs) after rebuilding momentum following a difficult stretch that saw him suffer consecutive defeats against Martin Bakole, Carlos Takam and Ryad Merhy.

Yoka, the 2016 Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist, had once been viewed as one of boxing’s future heavyweight stars. Tall, athletic and technically polished, the Frenchman was expected to transition quickly into world-level contention after defeating Joe Joyce in the Olympic final in Rio.

Instead, his professional career became increasingly turbulent as questions emerged regarding his toughness under pressure and ability to handle physically imposing heavyweights. However, recent performances have suggested a steadier and more mature version of Yoka may now be emerging under trainer Don Charles.

Stylistically, the matchup is highly intriguing.

Gassiev remains one of the sport’s most dangerous body punchers and compact pressure fighters. Though somewhat slower and more methodical than during his cruiserweight peak, he still carries heavy hands, elite timing and a calm, grinding style capable of breaking opponents down over time.

Yoka, meanwhile, figures to rely heavily on movement, range control and his jab. His clearest path to victory likely involves replicating aspects of Otto Wallin’s successful approach against Gassiev in 2023 — forcing the Russian contender to reset repeatedly while piling up rounds from distance.

The central question may come down to whether Yoka can maintain discipline and mobility for twelve rounds without being trapped and worn down by Gassiev’s pressure and body attack.

The event will headline IBA Pro 19 and is expected to feature one of the stronger heavyweight undercards of the summer.

The stakes are enormous.

Gassiev currently occupies a strong position within the WBA structure and could move even closer to a future shot at unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk depending on how the title situation unfolds later this year.

For Yoka, a victory in Moscow would instantly revive his standing within the heavyweight division and place him firmly back into the world title conversation.

For the loser, however, true elite heavyweight contention may begin slipping permanently out of reach.
