Andy Ruiz Jr. Returns Against Damian Knyba on September 4 in Newark

Newark, NJ, USA - Former unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. (35-2-1, 22 KOs) will make his long-awaited return to the ring when he faces towering Polish contender Damian Knyba (17-1, 11 KOs) on September 4 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The heavyweight clash headlines the third installment of "The Fight," the new monthly boxing series presented by Matchroom Boxing, TNT Sports and DAZN. The event will air live in the United States on TNT, truTV and DAZN, with worldwide coverage available on DAZN.

For Ruiz, the bout marks his first appearance since fighting Jarrell Miller to a majority draw in August 2024 and his first since signing a promotional agreement with Matchroom Boxing. More importantly, it represents the beginning of what the former champion hopes will be one final run toward the top of the heavyweight division.

Ruiz Begins Another Title Chase

Ruiz stunned the boxing world in June 2019 when he stopped Anthony Joshua to become the first Mexican-born heavyweight world champion. Although he lost the rematch later that year, his hand speed, combination punching and ability to overwhelm larger opponents remain among the division's most recognizable attributes.

Since the Joshua rematch, however, Ruiz has competed only three times, recording victories over Chris Arreola and Luis Ortiz before settling for a majority draw against Jarrell Miller. "I'm going to be fighting in Newark, New Jersey on September 4 baby," said Ruiz Jr. "After we get this victory, I would love to fight all the guys that have the belts Oleksandr Usyk vacated and we're going to become a two-time champion next year, let's get it."

With Oleksandr Usyk having vacated the major heavyweight titles, the championship picture has shifted dramatically over the past year. Ruiz enters a division with multiple champions and fresh opportunities, making a convincing victory over Knyba essential if he hopes to work his way back into world title contention.

Knyba Looks to Capitalize

Standing across the ring will be one of the biggest physical tests Ruiz has faced in recent years.

The 6-foot-7 Damian Knyba, 30, returns to the Prudential Center for the fourth time in his professional career looking to score the biggest victory of his life. The Polish heavyweight suffered his first professional defeat in January when he challenged Agit Kabayel for the WBC Interim heavyweight title, but he showed flashes of his potential before eventually being stopped in the third round.

Now, Knyba has an opportunity to immediately re-establish himself among the heavyweight contenders.

Whether Ruiz can consistently close the distance after two years away from competition may ultimately determine the outcome.

While Ruiz remains one of the division's biggest names, there is little margin for error.
