Clash for Canada: Alexis Barrière Faces Stan Surmacz in Montréal

MONTRÉAL, CANADA — Alexis Barrière will continue his climb back toward the international heavyweight picture when he faces Alberta’s Stan Surmacz in a 10-round main event on October 3, 2026, at the Théâtre St-Denis in Montréal.

Barrière 13-1 (11 KOs) and Surmacz 14-1 (9 KOs) will contest the vacant IBF North American and WBO NABO Heavyweight Titles in an all-Canadian showdown that could establish a new domestic frontrunner.

For Barrière, the bout represents the next stage of a rebuilding campaign that began earlier this year.

The 31-year-old southpaw suffered the first defeat of his professional career in October 2025, when Italian fringe-contender Guido Vianello dropped him late in the fourth round and stopped him in the fifth in Philadelphia.

It was an abrupt end to Barrière’s unbeaten run and revealed the considerable jump between dominating developing opposition and competing against an experienced international heavyweight.

Barrière responded in March with a more measured performance against Robert Simms. The durable American had never previously been stopped, but Barrière remained patient, gradually increased the pressure and forced the referee’s intervention during the seventh round at the Casino de Montréal.

That victory restored Barrière’s momentum. Defeating Surmacz would now bring him two regional championships and possible entry into the IBF and WBO heavyweight rankings.

Stan Surmacz Arrives With His Own Opportunity

Surmacz brings an imposing 14-1 professional record to Montréal, although his route to this opportunity has been highly unconventional.

The 36-year-old Edmonton heavyweight began his professional career in 2015 and recorded several notable domestic victories before stepping away from conventional boxing following a December 2019 win over the previously unbeaten Mario Rodriguez Juarez.

After more than six years without a professional boxing appearance, Surmacz returned in Mexico in early 2026. He defeated Jesus Enrique Aceves Rangel in January before stopping Fernando Miguel Tamayo Alvarez in the sixth round the following month.

Known as “Silverback,” the powerful Albertan has stopped nine of his 14 professional opponents. While he has not faced the same level of opposition as Barrière, his size, physical strength and punching power make him a dangerous opponent in a direct exchange.

For Surmacz, this is the defining opportunity of his career. A victory in Barrière’s home province would immediately transform him from a largely regional heavyweight into the holder of two internationally recognized belts.

Canadian Heavyweight Supremacy at Stake

Barrière enters with the greater international experience, having shared the ring with Vianello and stopped a proven survivor in Simms.

Surmacz, however, arrives with very little to lose. He has been handed the chance to upset a heavily promoted Québec heavyweight, capture two titles and alter the Canadian heavyweight landscape in a single night.

Barrière should possess the advantages in height, range and recent activity. His task will be to maintain distance, use his straight left hand and prevent Surmacz from turning the contest into a physical battle at close quarters.

Surmacz must find a way inside and make Barrière uncomfortable. If he can force exchanges and test the Québec fighter’s composure following the Vianello defeat, the bout could become far more difficult than the local favourite expects.

The winner will not automatically establish himself among the world’s elite heavyweights, but he will leave Montréal with a significantly stronger position—and a clear route toward more important international opposition.

On a quiet heavyweight schedule, Barrière-Surmacz offers something increasingly valuable: two heavyweights with attractive records, a genuine domestic rivalry and consequences extending beyond fight night.
